Head of the Department of Cultural Heritage Protection and Restoration at Akdeniz University Faculty of Fine Arts, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Hakan Öniz stated that they started underwater excavation works at a depth of approximately 45-50 meters in Besmi Island, off the coast of Kaş district of Antalya, in 2024, within the scope of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism's 'Heritage for the Future Project'.
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Öniz, who said that the findings they came across in one of the amphoras excited them very much, said, “Although it is known that they exist, we have never seen these findings in amphoras before, and we have read only a few examples of them in the world, and this is a first in Türkiye.” Assoc. Prof. Dr. Öniz, who stated that they brought the amphoras from the shipwreck to the surface using underwater robots, said, “We have started to implement underwater excavations with robots that go deep into the water for the last year. Olives, or rather olive pits, were found in one of the amphoras that we brought out with the help of robots.”
